Organic vs. Paid Advertising (Part 1)

Organic? SEO? PPC? What does it all mean? Where do I start?

To start off with here are some definitions:

SEO (Search Engine Optimization): Process of optimizing your website to make it rank and show up organically on search engines

PPC (Pay Per Click): Search engine ads which cost the advertiser each time a person clicks on the ad

Organic: Attract your audience naturally without paying for ads

Paid: Attracting your audience through ads

Search Engines: Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.

Today I am going to talk about organic advertising (watch for part 2 next week). When people talk about organic SEO they are talking about how well your website shows up without paying for an advertisement. This means that when someone uses search terms related to your business, your website shows up at the top of the results. Sounds great, right? It is, but it’s not easy!

Raising your organic ranking takes a lot of time and effort. There are many ways to improve organic rankings from having a relevant keyword list, creating content with your keywords, having multiple backlinks to your website, and much more. It can take months and months to see any progress from all the work you're doing, not to mention costly if you are hiring someone to improve your organic SEO.

If it’s so hard then why do it? It is very beneficial long term for your website to be showing up without having to pay for ads. Once you have made it to the top, your ranking will remain relatively stable (assuming you continue to maintain organic content). It also creates brand authority and helps show search engines that you are the expert.

So, why is someone who has a business running search ads talking about organic SEO? Because it’s important to understand what it is and why it is important! Even when using PPC you should never forget about what you can be doing to improve your organic ranking.
